History:

Founded in 1859 and originally called Golden City, Golden was formed during the era of the gold rush and quickly established itself as an economic and cultural center of the region. It then became the seat of Jefferson County and, for a while, was even the Colorado Territorial Capital! Denver might have snagged the title of the Colorado capital at a later date, but Golden still has the distinction of being the original Colorado capital and the fact that it was a thriving hub is still felt to this day. Golden is also the final resting place of WIlliam F. Cody, better known to western afficionados as Buffalo Bill. The grave site is accompanied by the Buffalo Bill Museum, created to preserve his memory.

Golden is also chock full of museums – it is, in fact, the city with the most museums relative to its size in Colorado! Railroad enthusiasts can visit the Colorado Railroad Museum, visitors interested in the Rocky Mountains can have their curiosity sated by the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum, and the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum and history buffs can enjoy the Golden History Center.

Of the many notable things about the city of Golden, CO, perhaps the most notable one is that it’s home to the world-famous Coors Brewery, which is the single largest brewery in the whole world! In addition the that, there are many microbreweries, such as Barrels & Bottles Brewery, Mountain Toad Brewing and Cannonball Creek Brewing Company, as well as many others. As far as the performing arts go, Golden is home to the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, a 75-person group of world-class musicians, as well as the Miners Alley Playhouse, an award-winning professional theatre.
